API description

Public API Description v1

Describes the public type-rating and capacity-selection APIs for BITZER gas coolers. Type rating calculates a known gas cooler; capacity selection finds ranked candidates for a required duty. Both run inside the request, so there are no public jobs to create or poll, and no API key is required.

Every field, limit and example on this page is taken from the running API. Values in tables are rounded for display; the JSON blocks show the API format.

JSON rules

  • Property names are camelCase; JSON numbers use a decimal point.
  • Enum values are transported as names, not integers.
  • Unknown properties are rejected.
  • Geometry dimensions, connection dimensions, baffle fields and solver settings are outputs, not inputs.
  • GET /openapi.json answers with application/json; send Accept: application/vnd.oai.openapi+json for the OpenAPI media type.
  • CORS is restricted to the deployment’s own origin, so call the API from a server or a proxy rather than from a browser page on another domain.

Capacity selection

Capacity selection uses the same calculation engine as the BITZER tool and MCP. It evaluates the requested operating point, returns ranked candidates in value.matches and recommendation categories in value.recommendations, and does not create a public job or calculation reference.

Response contract

A successful response has status = Success and contains calculated candidates. A client must choose one returned candidate explicitly before requesting a type-rating result or any downstream artifact. Validation, dependency, solver, timeout and physical-domain failures remain structured failures; no candidate is substituted.

Client workflow

  1. Collect requiredCapacityKw and the operating-point fields listed below.
  2. POST the JSON request to the capacity-selection endpoint and require status = Success.
  3. Choose a concrete candidate from value.matches; do not infer or synthesize a model name.
  4. Use the selected gasCoolerName in the type-rating endpoint when a detailed result is needed. For MCP artifacts, use the MCP selection and candidate workflow because the public endpoint does not create a calculationId.

Accepted gas cooler names

gasCoolerName must be one of the names the API accepts. GET /models returns them; a bare geometry code is rejected. The tool itself derives the name from a capacity selection — this API rates a name that is already known.

At or above criticalPressureKPa the answer is regime Transcritical and the three saturation fields are null. Before a subcritical calculation, keep the shell-side temperatures and any co2OutletTemperatureC target below saturationTemperatureC, and co2OutletTemperatureC at or below maxCo2OutletTemperatureC.

Physical domain and design limits

A request inside the field ranges is not automatically calculable: the operating point has to be inside the product domain and the calculated unit has to satisfy the design limits. Both are reported as a structured failure, never as a substituted value.

RuleEffect when violated
Subcritical operation (co2InletPressureKPa < 7377.3) needs the whole shell-side temperature range below the R744 condensing temperature at that pressure: inlet, the shellOutletTemperatureC target and a co2OutletTemperatureC target all with marginValidationError / PhysicalStateInvalid; the message names the condensing temperature it compared against
Shell-side main crossflow velocity must reach 0.300 m/s (0.600 m/s is the fouling-control target)SolverFailed / DesignLimitExceeded; the message names actual value and limit
CapacityDriven derives the shell flow from requiredCapacityKw, so the requested duty has to be reachable for the geometrytoo low: the resulting flow misses the velocity limit (DesignLimitExceeded); too high: SolverFailed / SolverDidNotConverge
For Water the admissible shell temperature window follows from shellInletPressureKPa: the upper bound is the water vapour pressure minus a 1 bar pressure-drop allowance and a 35 kPa safety marginValidationError / DesignLimitExceeded on shellInletTemperatureC with the window in min/max. At 130 kPa(a) the window collapses to 1 … 1 °C; from about 200 kPa(a) upwards normal shell temperatures pass
GET /saturation needs a pressure that is not immediately below the critical pressurebetween roughly 7351 and 7377.2 kPa(a) it answers 400 with "too close to the critical pressure"; below that it returns the saturation state, at or above 7377.3 kPa(a) the transcritical regime

Working reference points from the published cases — transcritical: 8500 kPa(a), R744 inlet 95 °C, shell 20 → 30 °C, name GK1106K-08T-1V. Subcritical: 5100 kPa(a) (condensing temperature 15.1 °C), R744 inlet 60 °C with outlet target 14 °C, shell 5 → 10 °C, name GK1412K-06B-1P. At 5100 kPa(a) a shell outlet target of 12 °C already leaves too little margin and is rejected.

Calling the API with a single GET URL

The calculation is also reachable as one URL, for clients that can open a public GET address but cannot send a POST body — browsers, documentation tools, monitoring checks and web-fetching assistants. Method and payload differ, the calculation does not: same mapper, same validation, same solver.

Sending none or more than one of these is rejected with the admissible combinations in the message. shellThermalMode can also be stated explicitly; it then wins and is checked against the fields as usual.

Response size, caching, limits

  • Compact by default: the envelope of the POST response without the calculation sheet and the trace artifacts — about 3 kB instead of 176 kB. &detail=full returns the complete POST body.
  • Cacheable: ETag plus Cache-Control public, max-age=300. The tag covers the parameters and the catalog revision, not the result, so If-None-Match is answered with 304 before a calculation runs.
  • Shared limit: GET and POST draw on the same allowance of 10 calculations per minute per client and API instance, so the URL form does not double the budget.
  • Strict parameter list: an unknown parameter, or a parameter sent twice, is rejected with the field name — a typo such as co2InletTempC must not disappear into a default. The decimal separator is a point; 0,6 is rejected with that hint.
  • Errors use the same shape as the calculation: status, failureCode, failureDetails, validationErrors[].field.
